I'm sorry that I only had one skein to giveaway. So many people correctly guessed the unidentified plant! It is indeed a teasel.
It is also known as clothier's teasel and clothier's brush. It can be used to clean, align, or raise the nap or brush a piece of fabric--especially wool. It is an invasive species, a single plant can produce over 2,000 seeds and remain viable for at least 2 years. It was introduced to the US in the 1700s.
