Beautiful Buttons

As you are probably aware by now, I simply love color! I am an enthusiastic dyer of my handspun yarn, but don't like to limit what I put in my dyepots. Quite by accident, I discovered that you can dye buttons! Yes, buttons.

Check out these absolutely beautiful handmade buttons by Pymatuning Crafts:
Because I refuse to leave well enough alone, I overdyed these buttons using RIT dye. I just added dye and boiling water then let them soak at least an hour.

I rinsed them under water until the water ran clear and let them dry for a few days. Look! They turned out fantastic.

I love the way the grain of the oak buttons show up in purple.

Even the arborvitae looks fabulous dyed navy.
Then I couldn't stop myself and grabbed a bunch of buttons from a jar I purchased at a local consignment shop.
I got the idea to dye buttons from the RIT website. Check it out, they have loads of project ideas.

  1. how cool is that? Whatcha gonna do with all those buttons?

  2. Hi, Kathy. Well, I was going to use the buttons in a knitted garment, but I saw handknit scarf on Etsy that used buttons as an embellishment. So that got me thinking...they'd be great in some funky jewelry, too.
